Tools: Plain Tee or Tank (many find that cotton is the easiest to work with), Fabric Razor Blade, Measuring Tape, and wood cutting board or hard ironing board, sewing machine (optional).
Step 1: Picking the perfect tee.
Choose something without too many embellishments. You want to choose a top that has a flattering fit. Plain tanks and tees work the best; a cleaner canvas allows more room for creativity.
Step 2: Have a basic cut in mind.
We all know what it's like to get a bad haircut (when your hairdresser keeps chopping off precious inches of hair). So keep your last bad haircut in mind while slicing up your shirt. Envision what you want your ending result to look like BEFORE you start slicing away.
Step 3: Cut and Create
After you've chosen your design, take your tee and slide the cutting board (or ironing board) between the layers of the tee from the bottom hem to the neck hem. For this particular shirt, I wanted a back cut, so I positioned the front face down and the back of the tee facing up. Measure about 1/2 inch down from the neckline hem to mark where you want to begin your cut. Then measure and mark your halfway point across the neckline. This point will mark the vertical "spine" line that runs from the top hem to the bottom hem. Using the razor blade cut from the side hem of the shirt to your middle "spine". Cut an identical line about 1/4 inch below the first cut. This is how to create the "rib". Continue to create the "ribs" all the way from the neck hem to the bottom hem of the tee. Following the same lines, continue onto the other side of the "spine." (TIP: There should be no scraps of material; you're not removing material, only cutting it.)
Step 4:
Your Skeleton-Tee is now ready-to-wear! Handwash and air dry only.
(OPTIONAL) To make your Skeleton-Tee washer and dryer friendly, use a sewing machine to hem the "ribs" to stop them from fraying.
