FILM CLUB - Session #2

One of the things I look at for the weekends is Film Club. This week Adrian Castro presented John Landis's comedy horror flick An American Werewolf in London (1981). I must admit, I'm not really a film buff but Mr Castro has done a smart job of intro us viewers to the wonderful world of films, in particular to those ones that are made before my time.

The film was a piece of quirky dialogued, simple and pyschologically flowing piece of work, that blood and gore didn't make your stomach turn but made you crave for more. The comedic timing was on the spot and there's no part that left you bored.

I'm starting to really appreciate films and how its crafted. I mean, I use to be so superficial about films, so vague in what I really like about it and clueless to how it was made. Yes....I was one of those people, those types of people who just like "action" films for the sake of it, not understanding anything but the eye candy special effects. "That was so cool! I love that scene where things just blow up!"....

This week we had Mike Kang (who has released his feature film "Gossip Nation" in Hoyts Cinemas), David Ball, Adrian Castro, Thuy Ng, Alan Lee, Quan Tran & myself. All of whom I have in my developing film circle. And you know what? Its not who you know, but how inspired you can get them on their own developments and inject inspiration onto your project as well.

This year I've been quite selective with whom I spend time with. Time is so scarce and it will never go backwards, so if I'm not learning anything new or growing, there's no point. Days of parties, clubbing and just spending time with people who just don't know where they are heading is a no go zone. Even networking has become a rarity for me. Knowing about who's who will not ensure sustainability, it is more of a superficiality tool when one becomes too concerned about who's who on the, let's say film food chain, what films are being made, roles available and how we can kick our competition up the **** to get there.

Film Club, hence, is a special initiative, and its low-key and focus on each other's abilities and strength is the way to go. Everyone on board are such profound, powerful beings with great energies and genuineness. These initial members will be the role models for the others when the club grows as well. The focus is on storytelling and not on the glitz and face-value of the moving picture craft.

On a personal note, I now see who's who on my close circle team, and I've finally found my extended film family (referring to Sydney team, because I've also got extend film family members in Melb.)
