JACKIE CHAN IS BORN: A cut above Street Art

After 4 Monday week nights at Pine Sts A Cut Above Street Art with stencil extraordinaire Chris Tamm, I was exposed to this underground form of expression.

Chris introduced the intimate group of 6 to stenciling, pasting, tagging and graffiti art and the various “rebellious” ways that stereotypically street kids would express themselves through.

But the gist of street art is really any form of expression done in a public space, it is pretty much a poor man’s art or art that wasn’t sanctioned by the government.

Types of Street Art

Graffiti artwork: public markings on property

Stencil graffiti: makes use of a paper, cardboard, or other media to create an image or text that is easily reproducible.

Sticker art: image or message is publicly displayed using stickers. Below is Craig's a.k.a "Bunkwaa" red balloon artwork. He also teaches at Pine St Community Arts Centre.

Others include street poster art, Video projection, Art intervention, Guerrilla art and Flash mobbing

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Click here to have a read of “Ninjas of Dawn” Flash Mobbing social experiment I coordinated with the Rumble Pictures and 9Lives Parkour crew in August 2008.

Im not too great at creating designs but I managed to come up with this little Jackie Chan Bear design of mine during the workshop.

This was the original done in free hand with a black marker, then it was scanned and fixed up in photoshopped. I made a felt bear from it, then took a photo of this and cropped it out, reshaped and with the help of Marie Setiawan a more experienced graphics artist, who did some touch up work of it.

Perhaps I might have taken the long way to get this done, but Im still content to get the final product in the end.

So in conclusion, Ive got 5 shirt giveaways across Australia. Just email me in with your details and tell me creatively, where you would wear your Jackie Chan shirt.

STENCIL GRAFFITI: Week 4 of the course and Chris gave us the low down of what stencil graffiti was all about and this inspired me to create the 60cm x 50cm giant Jackie Chan stencil that was permanently installed on that same night at the legal wall in Darlington.

Quest for Jackie Chan via street art? Yes. I think that’s one aspect I will venture down, particularly when I am a poor woo ”man” fundraising my way for my August around Australia trip to extend this project and share it with the rest of Australia. You wouldn’t believe the amount of knock backs I’ve got from the richest law firms in Australia, top investors, business owners, entrepreneurs etc…I know, I’m not Baz Luherrman, Nicole Kidman or their Hugh Jackman nor do I hold a household name.

At the end of the day, I’m just a crazy “Lil Azn grl afta Jackie CHAN!!!!!”. Apparently its more marketable. Bla! Why I can’t be me not so chopsocky!!!

Until next time my followers….

P.S - Shout out to the people from my course!

And of course, other photos!

FLASH MOBBING: Ninjas of Dawn

19/09/2008 RUMBLE NINJA'S SPOTTED!!

Recently we executed "The Ninja's of dawn" Project. A mediocre success, Rumble crew decided to take advantage of the newly acquired ninja suits (compliments of the Downtown Rumble Production), and stir up some controversy for the upcoming MC2 launch. RP rocked up to Martin Place, to channel 7's Sunrise show, in hopes to be televised!

Nine Lives, our fellow Le Pakour group and our crew worked together to gather crowd attention, however we were unable to get the station to come up to us, receiving a consolation prized autograph photo of one of the presenters of the show.

After wards we traveled around the City, and copped some discriminatory " get away from me" looks" ---with the occasional racial remark or two. But heh, it didn't bother me at all having preoccupied myself half the day thinking up as many ninja jokes as possible. My recurrent fav on the day-- "What? You don't like me! It's because I'm black isn't!?!". High-larity!

The day was long but extremely enjoyable. We didn't get what we wanted but we did get an experience. Shout out to 9 Lives and the RP crew for their patience and spirit.

Downtown Rumble 2 - In Working Progress...

On to other news, “Downtown Rumble 2” Australian kung fu series has plans to be made in late November, 2009. So far, Marie Setiwan has been the leading developer in the writing process of this series. I think Rumble Pictures have a lot going for them this year. A youth based group gaining opportunities to develop concepts from the beginning to end is very rare. For me, I really want to explore myself as a action film performing artist and really improve on this. What is the point of "ActionFilmGirl" tagline if I don't pursue the "action". But everything is a working progress and I really believe in the projects that I've been involved in so far.

Here is a trip back down memory lane and a thank you to all that was involved in the first TV series.

Mini tour of Blue Mountains

Date: 28th August, 2009.
Location: Blue Mountains

It was an early start of 8am (we were suppose to start at 6am) after a nice quick breakfast at my mum’s bakery.

Myself, Wushu Wang Fei & driver Joseph Hieu began our road trip to Blue Mountains. This destination is 90 kilometres away from home and it took us about 1 hour 41 mins but I think it would is good to take Wang Fei to view a different scenery compared to China’s hustle and bustle and cramp spaces.

Unfortunately, the weather did hold up and it was super windy. There was a thick blanket of mist that overshadowed the mountain so there wasn’t much of a view.

Normally the setting would look like picture below,

But today it look like this.

We retreated at the visitor centre where we had some fun mucking around with some touristy memorabilia.

Due to bad weather, we retreated at Blue Mountains Chocolate Café
176 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia. Open 7 days: 10am – 6pm Shop: (02) 4782 7071 to try out their famous real hot chocolate, enjoy free chocolate tastings and view their range of specialty chocolates. W got to make it ouself with real chocolate (dark, milk or white) in a special cup heated by a candle.

After this, we went to Featherdale Wildlife Park. This is a where people can hand feed a kangaroo, wallaby or emu - or enjoy a face-to-face encounter with one of the friendly koalas - amongst one of Australia's largest private collections of Australian native animals and bird life.

Infusion Xmas Party: An informal Networking Cocktail Function

For those of you who are yet to be familiar with Infusion, in a nutshell, they are a casual Asian-Australian business networking group who run calendar events throughout the year that call upon guest speakers and professionals to share their experiences. I have connected with them via my daily rituals of what I termed “google stalking”; this is a deliberate exercise I engage in to scope what other people are doing that can connect with me and my interests. From here, I meet Judy Chueng – an Melbourne-based Infusion events director during my Melbourne University Maximum Choppage: Round 2 Screening. Finally, I connected with Sydney-based Infusion events director savvy marketer Sandra Lie through another Maximum Choppage: Round 2 screening, this time in Sydney. This has now led me to being invited to this Xmas function.

Its very difficult for a westie girl to get dolled up and travel great distances to attend a function in which she doesn’t know what to expect. I definitely didn’t want to look like that country bumpkin that was simply out of place. First things first, I rocked up 1 ½ late this time (highly unusual of me) and had difficulty finding the place. I trotted several times, up and down, down and up, bar to bar to find this “International Cultural Centre”. I envisioned a massive erected building of some sort with huge silver Times Roman Numeral signage but was met with a narrow entrance gallery type venue.

My plug on the venue:
Address: 72 Erskine – The Sydney International Cultural Centre – an events and exhibition, Centre (www72erskine.com), a minute walk from Wynyard Station, provides 4 floors of a unique location in the part of town where all you see is corporate buildings, Price Water Coopers, Macquarie Bank etc…

The more I spent time in it, the more I’d realized what a great little place it was. At the time, Ulrick Schild art collection was on displayed. These series of artworks feature bold vibrant colours splashed across huge canvasses. I fancied his use of courageous brushstrokes which adds to the boldess yet fresh approaches in life.

The food was far from fantastic. Standard finger food of spring rolls, quiches, cage, beef skewers, triangles, limited wine vouchers were the standard for the night. However, any person who goes to something like this should know the value lies in the networking

How did I feel? At first out of place, newbie about it. A little be awkward as to how to start a conversation. Usually feel in control at network but this time round, I’m in the back burner. Great learning experience though, watching people’s style of networking Chris Walker & Grant Mc Farland from Dark Blue Fire are particularly interesting and quirky characters.
Get InRhythm (http://www.inrhythm.com.au/) unique interactive entertainment proved to be quite fun and memorable and most definitely a stress reliever! I’d never thought that a series of communal drum pounding exercises can be so addictive and exciting. My hand is definitely ready to drum someone on the face If needed be! Hahaha! Jokes!

Maria Tran’s 5 Tips to Networking.
1. Don’t be afraid. Start with a smile and an introduction to your name and away you go!
2. Don’t come in too strong. Don’t ‘pitch’ yourself at any given moment as if you are trying to sell some product. It gets really annoying to those people who simply just want to chill out.
3. Keep within your space. Don’t cross over and invade people’s space cushion. It is really quite rude.
4. Never judge a book by its cover and pass them off. You might be passing off a potential opportunity
5. Listen twice as much as talking.
