Women Leave It Too Late to Have Children

Women are putting off having babies until they have established a career. This is not good for the child. A woman in her prime is more capable of providing the nourishment a baby needs. Bottle feeding from birth is a poor alternative. The baby does not get the antibodies the mother has and there is the danger of obesity - too much nourishment of the wrong kind. Human babies are not calves.

Older mothers rely on IVF and freezing of eggs. There has been a rush for egg freezing in recent years. Doctors don't even need to advertise the service, though many do. Women in their early twenties see it as "insurance" for putting off having a family.

There are problems, however, in relying on frozen eggs. The success rate is low. Just under half do not give birth from eggs frozen for 10 years. It is unfortunate that some are making a business out of providing a service that will disappoint many women who have left it too late to have children.

Higher Taxes and Charges Will Pay for the Elderly

It is always amusing when politicians say such-and-such will be dire in the latter half of this century or in 2050. Most of us will be dead by then! Treasurers in particular are good at saying ridiculous things about the future, just to frighten us I suppose. Few are scared by this though. Most ignore such thoughts as being irrelevant.

An aging population and the imminent care crisis are cases in point. How are these problems to be solved? Well, the elderly could be taken out and shot. Political parties would like that because the aged are the largest voting block.

Many things will change before these crises. In Australia superannuation is mandatory. Apart from the idle few who have managed to stay on welfare throughout their lives, precious few will be eligible to claim the state funded aged pension. Some post-baby boomers will have a difficult time. Starting superannuation late in life will provide just a pittance in income, but they will be knocked back for the aged pension.

The elderly with their memories fading will need state money spent on care for them, So spending will be reallocated from pensions. Not all is lost. Even now, when people are "forced" into government care their houses are sold from under them by the Government. Indeed, a large slice is taken from a lifetime of wealth building. The offspring can complain. Without power of attorney the state wins out.

No matter what happens in the future, ways and means will be found to offset a prevailing problem. One thing is certain - taxes and charges will go up to pay for it.

New Weapon to Fight Cane Toads

At last - a solution to Australia's can toad problem. Decades ago the pest was introduced from Hawaii to combat bugs that were attacking sugar cane, but instead of eating the target beetles the cane toads went about settling down here and have been destroying the native habitat ever since. Cane toads have recently reached Perth in Western Australia. Now they are established in every Australian state.

Everything has been tried to kill them from hitting them with sticks, gassing them with carbon dioxide, to freezing them. None of this has had any effect on their numbers. A way has now been found, however, of killing off the pests. Placing a few teaspoons of cat food next to ponds in the Northern Territory attracts meat eating ants. When the baby can toads appear from the pond they are eaten by the ants.

Most native creatures are affected by the poisonous toxin put out by can toads. Fortunately, the ants are fully resistant. All the toad eggs hatch at the same time, so if you activate the ants you win the battle. The ants kill 98 percent of baby toads in the first two minutes. Eighty percent of survivors die of inuries during the next day.

Already do-gooders are complaining, saying ants killing toads is inumane. One species killing another is as natural as it can get. What else can be done? Are we expected to give them a packed lunch and send them on they way?
